Fishing in St Helens

St Helens is a fishing town in Tasmania's North East and enjoys the reputation for game fishing and warmer weather than most of Tasmania. For this reason, St Helens is a popular town to buy property, whether to live or holiday in. A popular tourist town, where visitors can fish and boat along the coast. A good variety of fish is available fresh from various outlets in St Helens.

by Gary Goldate

Tasmaia is Australia's island state. It lies to the south of the mainland and is the closest point of Australia to the Antarctic.

The township of St Helens is nestled at the back of George Bay, a sheltered waterway situated a quarter of the way down Tasmania's east coast.

St Helens is quickly becoming recognised locally and internationally as the game fishing capital of Tasmania, providing a large range of esturine and offshore species all year round. Relatively mild weather is experienced, even over winter due to the protection fron the prevailing westerly winds. Five boat ramps service the area, including two giving direct access to the ocean, thereby eliminating the need to cross St Helens Barway.

One of the best guide to the area is Rocky Carosi from ST HELENS PROFESSIONAL CHARTERS. Rocky reports that several factors make St Helens a world class game fishing area. Good water depth (100 meters) only three miles from shore. Oxygen rich warm water from the north combining with nutrient rich colder water from the south creating upwellings and current lines.

Inshore reef systems such as Merricks, Pulfers, Middle Ground and Eddystone rising from 60 meters to within 6 meters of the surface`provide huge baitfish holding areas. Low fishing pressure and the close proximity of the Continental Shelf make this a great fishery.

Species encountered include, ALBACORE TUNA, YELLOWFIN TUNA, BLUEFIN TUNA, STRIPED MARLIN, MAKO and BLUE SHARK.

Best times to fish is January to June.

The rivers and lagoons around St Helens provide good estuary and bay fishing. Georges Bay at St Helens is quite large and offers a diverse range of species. A combination of the deep channel water running quickly at half tide, exposed sand flats at low tide split by deep gutters, extensive sea-grass beds, make it an ideal area for GARFISH, BREAM and FLATHEAD. Schools of small SALMON are a common target. Georges Bay lends itself ideally for those wishing to use a fly rod on the SALMON, GARFISH and BREAM.

Best times to fish,Garfish are March to July, Salmon are thickest January to June.

Most other species good all year round.

The many scattered reef systems within close proximity to St Helens Point Offer good quality, quantity and variety of reef fishing. For bottom fishing, the main advantage of St Helens is the large amount of broken reef within a five mile radius of Burns Bay ramp. These reefs are home to STRIPED TRUMPETER, SILVER MORWONG, TIGER FLATHEAD, COD, CORAL PERCH, PIKE, SQUID and LACHET.

Fishing is good all year round, although Striprd Trumpeter and Silver Morwong are present in greater size and numbers May to December.

Deep Sea fishing takes place over the edge of the Continental Shelf only in favourable conditions and in craft suitable to travel well offshore. The fishing here is quite sensational. Most of the best eating fish come from these great depths. With sizes up to 30kg, these fish are an amazing sight coming up from the depths.
Species caught here are, BLUE EYED TREVALLA, HAPUKA, GEMFISH, BLUE GRENADIER, PINK LING, RAYS and BREAM.

Fishing is good all year but best in November to June.

****************NEWS BREAK************************
